March 27, 2002 Destiny of Races Other Than Men and Elves My understanding from the Silmarillion and LOTR is that Elves enjoy bodily immortality provided they are not killed in battle or die of a broken heart, however, their destinies are tied to the earth. Me suffer mortal death, but have the capacity, if righteous, to go to a greater freedom beyond what elves enjoy. But what of hobbits and dwarves? NAd what of the souls of righteous elves who were captured and twisted against thier will by Melkor and Sauron? Does Professor Tolkein speak of these, or are they implied? He does have a Catholic Christian Theology which seems to underpin his mythology, so that may add more to the discussion. Any thoughts anyone? |
