I submitted an article like this before, but it never got posted for some unknown reason. Gandalf, if you look closely, actually has a DIFFERENT staff after escaping Orthanc than he does throughout the beginning of the movie. Specifically, the shape of the top is quite different, plus there is a wood vein that runs downt the first that is absent in the second (yes, I studied it that hard - maybe I'm a loser, but that's okay. What would REALLY suck would be to have studied it that hard and turned out to be WRONG - but you're all welcome to disagree with me anyway). It has been many years since I've read the books, as I'm not a good reader and movies fit my tastes much better, so my question is, was this talked about at all in the books? Did Gandalf get a new staff or did the books just not mention him ever losing it at Orthanc?

Whatever the books say, Jackson put a new staff in Gandalf's hand after his escape, no question, and the fate of his old one is yet to be discovered.
