Who Recommended That?

'It's just a parody, it's just a parody...' I had to repeat that to myself constantly as I read the book called "Bored of the Rings."

It IS just a parody: I've read several others, and found them funny, gently teasing, jocular...but I found the BOTR to be repulsive, innappropriate, and an example of everything a work of literature parody or otherwise should NOT be!

On this very site the MTV Gollum's acceptance speech was universally abhorred, yet somehow on this same site the BOTR was praised (I mean, if you think about it, MTV wasn't so out of line. Imagine if Gollum was to play himself in the LOTR movie. Would he like it? No, precious, he wouldn't. He hates this story. He hates his life. Although the swearing was unnecessary, at least the character was there. The BOTR had at least as much questionable material as MTV's speech, and the BOTR characters were murdered, by thier portrayal and by their parody aliases (dear Bilbo's nickname isn't even appropriate to print!))!

Filled to brimming with drug references, _other_ references (downscores in place of italics), crude humor, I couldn't appreciate any of the clever jokes made. The authors of this were very clever, but I wish they'd mess up their own works rather than polluting someone else's.

Drugs, pointlessness, and swearing completely ruined this book for me. Although it did not affect my love for Tolkien at all, I cannot call this a must-read but a must-avoid for anyone interested in a GOOD parody. Your better off looking in fan books and sites.

Dissappointedly Yours.
