August 17, 2003 Sauron/melkor Redemption Narsil/Anduril As to whether or not the Valar did enough trying to cure Melkor and then Sauron from there evil ways, they did all that they could. The reason they could not help Melkor was because he possessed a feeling/emotion that they had never comprehended, I believe it was envy or something. They could not help him once they took him captive the first time because they could not see the problem. It's in the Silmarillion but I dont have the book handy so I can't look up the exact emotion.
