Oh...that Finger!

While reading “The End of the Third Age”, I found a note that explained Frodo’s lost finger.

I had always thought he lost his middle finger: the one that you’re not allowed to let stand on its own. But, when Tolkien said “Third Finger”, he meant “Third finger not counting the thumb,” in other words, the ring finger!!

That makes more sense, and, though it sounds foolish, made me happier. I hated the idea of Frodo losing his middle finger, and, though I can’t explain why, somehow the ring finger seems less terrible to me. Odd.

Maybe it’s about balance or something.

Also: I was exaggerating about how many times I’ll be renting the TT. I like to exaggerate. For example: we’re re-shingling our roof, so all day today I had to haul around fifty billion shingles, got torn to shreds, broke my spine in twelve places, and did it all in million degree weather beneath the sun. So there.
