August 28, 2003 Is It That Time Again Already??? I swear you could set your watch by it, or at least a calendar. Like Christmas, questions about Balrogs and their would be wings return to grace us with their presence, and we all scream "dear God not again". But hey, tis fun too. My cents worth is that all Balrogs are like chickens, they have wings but cant fly. Ok they can glide a little but if there is a big drop then splat, squished Balrog. This neatly explains all references to wings and also the bugging questions about why a fall would kill them. My fav pro wing argument is that at night when the Nazgul overflew the Fellowship on the Anduin, it reminded them of the Balrog, perhaps that it had somehow followed after them. All of which points to wings. Not to mention other obvious refernces. The cant-fly reasons, why did Glorfindels Balrog die from his fall? why did the Balrogs not fly over the walls of Gondolin rather than waiting for the walls to be collapsed? (apart from the fact they needed Orcs in there too, course they could have taken the gate and opened it from the inside for the Orcs n co).
