'Concerning Smaug'

A while back there was a debate as to whether or not Smaug would have aided Sauron in his wars on Middle Earth. I believe I have found the answer to that, In the chapter The Quest of Erebor in the book Unfinished Tales Olorin kept saying that he had to either get rid of the Dragon immediatly or remove Sauron from Dol Gulder. He feared that Sauron would send an attack lead by Smaug and Crush both Lorien and Imladris. Therefore he sent Thorin and co. to remove Smaug and pursuade the council to attack Dol Guldur.
