September 4, 2003 Things Brett C, interesting point about Balrogs not being able to enter the Chamber of Mazarbul. However... the description of the doorway points to it being large. "...They found themselves in a large corridor. As the went along it the glimmer grew stronger, and they saw that it came through a doorway on the right. It was high and flat topped, and the stone door was still on its hinges, standing half open..." Dwarves build things big. Why describe the lintel as being high unless it was so high as to be worthy of note? High lintel, high doorway, perhaps a width to match its height and the width of the corridor. Dwarves taking the time and effort in the beauty of proportions. Besides, a Balrog is accepted at being 20 odd feet tall approx, this requires a big doorway for starters. So the door to the chamber was big, no argument there. The question is, how big? To me I can't see where Tolkien said it would be too small accomodate a winged Balrog. Methinks PJ nailed it nicely with his handling of the wings. They have bone structure but the "webbing" is pure smoke. Have wings, canny fly.
