Sorry Galdriel, nice try, but the word 'flying' in reference to the Balrog leaving Thangorodrim could simply be used as another word for 'fleeing', as in Gandalf's line to the Fellowship, "Fly you fools!"

Tinowien, don't be swayed! The portrayal in the movie is brilliant , but erroneous. The balrog of Moria no more had physically solid wings than it it was the towering 30 feet seen in the film (the average Balrog height being around 15-20', twice the height of a Noldor warrior, according to some of the Histories of Middle Earth). In the book they are wings of shadow and illusion, and no more.
