The Red Dawn?

In the TT, Legolas looks at the sunrise and declares that because it is red, blood had been spilt that night.

Is there anything in any of Tolkien's works to support this legend-thingy?

Or is it just Elf-lore they made up for the movie? I don't recognize it, but then I also forgot about half the battle of Helm's Deep, so how can I trust me now?
