September 10, 2003 Should Hobbits Have Pointy Ears? In the LOTR movies PJ has given the Hobbits pointy ears, much like the elves. We know that the elves had pointy ears but I’m not aware of anywhere in the books that says that Hobbits do. In fact, I was reading the Prologue of fellowship of the Ring “Concerning Hobbits” the other day and noticed the passage “…Hobbits are relatives of ours: far nearer to us than elves or even dwarves. Of old they spoke the languages of Men, after their own fashion, and liked and disliked much the same things as Men did. But what exactly our relationship is can no longer be discovered.” After reading this I was curious as to why the Hobbits in the movies would have pointy ears. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? |
