Gnomes in Middle Earth
Fallongirl5150

I was reading The Shaping of Middle Earth today and came across an odd thing that I hadn't really paid attention to before: Gnomes. I then had to lend the book to a friend.

Can someone tell me if gnomes are an alternative name for another race, like hobbits? Or are they a race that never came into play in LOTR? Or are they extinct?
