Don't Fret, Underhill!
Lilly
I really don't think they'll go so far as to change the story that drastically: marrying changes or character deaths.
Aragorn, Eowyn, and Sam's marriages must be what they were talking about. Everyone is a main character in their own right. And as to your statement that Sam wasn't...grr. He made the book, man.
And the deaths? Well, Theoden, Gollum, Frodo (mistaken), Merry (mistaken), Eowyn (mistaken), Pippin (mistaken), Denethor, and...and...well, I can't think of any others. They were probably just trying to freak you out.
Honestly, they CANNOT kill anyone who wasn't meant to die. That'd be bounding over the line that so far has only been balanced on.
Thier quest stands on the edge of a knife: should they stray any farther from the story, it would be the ruin of all, not to mention the loss of the Tolkien Fans' faith.
Anxiously yours.
