Elves, Thankyou's, and a Guilty Secret
Brett C.
Fallongirl5150, the name Gnomes was used by Tokien in his earliest versions of the Silmarillion to refer to the race se now call Elves. Hence the Noldor were ariginally the 'Deep Gnomes', and Ecthelion, who Annatar asmentioned killed the Balrog Lord Gothmog, was called 'The Gnome of the Fountain'.
For all those who have mentioned Hobbits and their pointy movie ears, I agree that there seems no mention in the books [indeed, there is more said about their feet] but in the discussion between Shagrat and Gorbag in Mordor the latter orc commander refers to Frodo's appearance, saying "Elvish it looked to me, but undersized." Considering the popular view of Elves having ponty ears, you could use this line to justify Hobbits having some small resemblance in the ear department. And of course, Elijah is already very Elvish in appearance.
Finally, thankyou thankyou thankyou Undomiel and Magic Fire for your very kind words, especially considering the subject - I hope I will not be remembered as the man who only argued about Balrogs. In the spirit of their thoughtfulness I will admit, Galadriel, [with an ironic little smile] that yes, the wings do look cool.
