LotR and Christianity
Annatar
Man of the Westernesse, good to see a fellow Donegal man here. I too had to laugh at chrissy's statement. All these years figuring I was a Christian and all I was, was a Catholic. I must convert quick hehehe.
Anyways more importantly, Okay LOTR does have some Christian beliefs instilled in it (most probably other religions too but I cant say). Self sacrifice and refusal of power(serve each other) being the most obvious. People seem to draw parallels between Frodo (or another character) and Christ. "Frodo is the Christ figure of LOTR" can sometimes be heard. While some of the things Frodo does may be following Christ, to say he, or any character, is a "Christ figure" is blasphemous. Likening a pure being to any flawed individual is not right. Frodo cannot be compared to God, to do so insults the Creator. All this is not to say that certain christian beliefs do permeate LOTR, however, more pagan beliefs are to be found in it, course it can be argued that alot of Christian beliefs are pagan in origin, Christmas - midwinters, All Hallows - Samhain.
Anyways enough of my preaching, here endith the lesson. Until later and Nine ride, :) Ash Nazg...
