Christianity, the True Hero, and Cartoon LotR
Jarrickon Half-elven
That's right, I'm back. The Half-elven has returned from a week of not being able to get online due to Tropical Storm Isabel. Hello, all.
Chrissy, I must disagree with you. Roman Catholics most certainly can be Christians (note: I am actually Baptist; thought I should throw that one in). Sadly, a good many of them are not and merely profess to be Christians while merely going through the motions, without ever coming to true saving faith of Jesus Christ. I agree that the RC church has added a lot that is plainly not in the Bible (i.e. Mary can forgive sins, necessarry to attend Mass and Confession, etc. . .), but all that is truely vital for salvation is to trust that the Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again in a final vanquishing of sin and death, and that he has forgiven your sins. Whether or not Tolkien was just going through the motions for a portion of his life I do not know, but I firmly believe that he was a saved Child of God. If you are right about that though, you are definately mistaken in saying that he was not saved before writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as he led former atheist Clive Staple Lewis to the Lord prior to their writing. That being said, I have just one thing to add to this topic: who the heck would name their child Clive Staple???
I believe that there are many heros in the Lord of the Rings, but I agree with Professor Tolkien in that Samwise Gamgee is the "chief hero." Most of the other characters excluding Sauron, Saruman, Gríma Wormtongue, and the denizens of Mordor, Harad, and Rhûn are also deserving of the title of Hero as well, though.
I had no idea that so many of the changes in the PJ adaption of the LotR were also in the Bakshi film. To tell the truth, I couldn't get that far in it. It was just too weird, what with the prologue consisting of red screen and silhouette people, art that looked a lot of the time like actors that had been painted over for some reason, and other things (Saruman of Many Colours is wearing bright red and his staff looks like a log; Sam is very retarted and is either afflicted with epilepsy or a severe case of Parkinson's disease). Don't even get me started on that pathetic Balrog. . . (and no, I don't remember if the bloody ting has wings!).
Namárië!
