September 30, 2003 Just a Thought on the Barrow Downs hey all. Over the past couple of years, particuarly when fellowship came out, I read alot of post on peoples views about the whole sequnce between the Shire and Bree being left out. Well it had dawned on me one of the significances of the barrow down sequence. After Tom rescues them from the Barrow down he brings all of the hobbits weapons. Now except for Frodo none of the hobbits change weapons throughout the books. And its when Merry first strikes the Ringwraith in ROTK that you learn the significance of this sword that came from the tombs of the old kings. That it was prepared by the ancient people for the cause of fighting the witch king. After i had read this part, the barrow down chapter had a special significance for me. I can only asume that Merry recieving this weapon was replaced by the scene where Aragorn brings all the hobbits weapons atop Weatertop. But now the weapons dont hold as much significance. I hope PJ will find somehow to express the significance of the weapons they hold. Just my two copper. |
