Gimli's Age

Lilly, if we use the Numenorean date system, then Gimli was born in 2879 and died in 3141. Frodo was born in 2968 so Gimli is in fact about 89 years older than Frodo and is about 139 in the year 3018 when he attends the Council of Elrond in Rivendell and becomes part of the Fellowship. I'm not sure why you think he is less than 60. His Family tree along with various other dates can be found in the ROTK appendices.

As for Gimli calling Legolas "laddie", I think that this is just a joke for the film. I'm pretty sure it does not happen in the book (well I don't recall it anyway).
