Gollum! *spoiler*

Hi Everybody! Is there room for one more? If you don't know how the story ends, please don't read this.
After years of reading (you guys are great, very insightful and often funny!), I finally had to respond. Hopefully everyone can stand one more person's opinion.
I think that Gollum did not deserve to die, but had to die. I don't think he could have survived long even if he did not destroy the Ring himself. In the end, he and the Ring became almost as one. I say this because in the book, Bilbo's health declined (his age caught up with him) after he gave the Ring away while Gollum's did not (at least I didn't think so). The Ring seemed to sustain him even if he was not in possesion of it physically.
What does everybody else think?
