Sauron: Response to a Character Slur
Annatar

Orangeblossom, while I agree that Sauron the Great was the person with the most influence, I have to strongly protest at the slur on his unblemished character. Sauron the Merciful never commited any acts of agression. After he had made peaceful approaches to the deceitful Elves of Eregion and taught them great craft, they without provocation attacked his domain west of the Misty mountains. They had however bitten off more than they could chew and so turned to the Numenoreans, who they deceived into aiding them in their cruel war. Countless numbers of good and faithful servants were lost to Sauron in those days, he mourns them still. In later days, while picking up the pieces of his glorious realm, Sauron was taken as prisoner to Numenor. He was taken, not in battle, but in peace, because he loves his followers and would save them pain if he could. In Numenor over time he was seen rightly as a friend. Alas, the Elvish influence again reared its ugly head. Elves jealous and afraid of strong Numenor, by devious and cunning schemes, plotted its downfall by placing them at odds with Valinor. Sauron out of friendship to the king at first sort to dissuade him from such a rash course. Alas his mind was set, and so, with a heavy heart Sauron gave Ar-Pharazon the knowledge to make greater weapons of war. Weapons that could fly leagues to their targets. We all know the result of the war, Numenor fell and the Elves laughed. Later the refugees from Numenor under the influence of those same Elves sort to finally destroy Sauron and the garden of Mordor. Mordor only became dust and ash filled after the Elves sowed the ground with salt. As for later wars, like that of The War of the Ring, this was just Sauron trying to regain his ancient realm. At first peacefully, as can be seen by his messenger approaching the Lonely Mountain seeking friendship, then with righteous force, as his friendship and message of brotherhood was spurned. Too many times have we seen the influence of the Elves at work, always they seek their own agenda. An agenda that would see them masters and all humans slaves. They know that Sauron would end their evil game as he seeks to spread peace and brother/sisterhood under the protection of the Eye.
Until later my friends, and may the blessings of Nazgul, Orcs and all free(ish) folk go with you :) Ash Nazg...
