December 2, 2003 In Response to Sandcastles I have begun reading the appendixes at the back of Return of the King. It seemed to me that Gondor did have the alliences in the past, but the line of kings failed, the kingdom of Gondor failed as well. I also remember reading that Umbar and Harad were under Mordor's rule. Making diplomatic ties with them would be like making ties with Sauron. They had the entire land under their control until Sauron began tearing at the kingdom. Gondor did relent in it's watch at times, but they did try to fix the problem of the shadow and the evil of Sauron. As the time of Sauron's power grew, Gondor fought at times what felt like a losing battle. I think they did what was right in the fighting of Sauron.
