The Power of the Ring
Eric the Brown

This is in response to Idril's question about the power of the ring and why it is so important. If you read FOTR Gandalf explains a little bit of its power to Frodo. Primarily Sauron poured a lot of his power into the ring so without the ring, even though he is quite powerful, he is lacking a part of himself and therefore lacking his full power. If you consider how potent Sauron is without the ring you can imagine his power with the ring. The second thing that would happen if he had his ring back is that he would gain control over the three rings held by the Elves. He would know all of their secrets and hold them in his thrall. Even without his ring Sauron is almost too powerful for the combined forces of good but with his ring his victory would be ineveitable and complete. I hope this answers your question and I have no doubt that there are some folks on this site who could give you an even more detailed explanation.

Twelve days to ROTK and reading the first few reviews has only added to my excitement. I hope you all have a great weekend.
