December 24, 2003 A Question Over the course of the release of the three movies, every once in a while I would read a fan comment or a review saying that Elijah Wood is too young to play Frodo, because Frodo was supposed to be 50 years old when the story begins. I am assuming that the people who say this don't know the story very well, or are forgeting the power of the Ring. I believe that the book describes Frodo after getting the Ring as "keeping the appearence of a young and engergetic hobbit just out of his tweens". Tweens, Tolkien goes on to explain, is the irrisponsible 20's between childhood and the coming of age at 33. So, I would liken tweens to be like our teenage years, so to me that means that Frodo, as a human, would look like he was around 21 years old...precisely around the age Elijah Wood was when the films were made!
