Gollum would have died with the ring...He said so himself, to Sam, on the slopes of mt. Doom. He said he would die into the dust.
Dussst.
Yeah, Denethor was brutally distorted. He's the Galadriel-figure of the 3rd movie.
--You know, you read the book, and Galadriel's this wise, noble, beautiful character who's kind of freaky...Then in the movie: BAM! MAJORLY freaky beyond imagination. Exaggerated, I felt.
In the 2nd movie, I thought Theoden was the Galadriel character...you picture this old man who at least retains speech abilities, and get the SUPERLATIVELY OLD MAN who can barely croak out a few words to his counsellor. You hear and picture the phrase 'puppet of Saruman' but never imagined a friggin' wizard exorsism.
I like Galadriel a full 100% better after the EE FOTR, but I'm still on occasion a little irked by Galadriel the Freaky, caster of eerie sidelong glances.
And after the ROTK I like Theoden much, much more...but Theoden the Decrepit, ventriloquist dummy of Saruman, will still strike me as a little over-the-top.
And I hope after the ROTK EE, we'll get a better glimpse of all that the director had in mind for Denethor, but until then Denethor the Crazy, Human Falling Star will annoy me.
AAAANNNNNDDDD.....
On a final note of question, since the question of Sauron's species has been raised (one of the Maiar, by the way), who knows WHAT TOM BOMBADIL IS?? Not in the Silmarillion that I can recall, this kind of lyrical, Daul-ish character puzzles me to no end.
Bomba-whatically yours.
