Denethor's Grief and Regret
Louimir

I like to hear your thoughts on this point:

When I first saw ROTK, I was quite disappointed with Denethor's sudden grief and regret over Faramir's tragic fate. I was unconvinced with his change of heart.

I couldn't remember what the book spoke of this part, and I will have to reread it again one of these days to compare the two.

But as I reviewed the film for the fifth time, it suddenly came to me that here was Pippin singing a song to Denethor as Faramir was throwing his own life away. I'm beginning to see that this song was the dagger that pierce Denethor's heart of stone (He was somewhat contemplative after the song ended, I think.) and made him regret all the things he'd done to his remaining son.

However, I'm still singing and singing Pippin's song trying to understand why, if it really did, changed Denethor's heart.

What do you think?
