It would be hard to improve on Brett C's post on 1-26-04, "Yes, Everett, the dam has burst"(which everyone should read) , for a list of Gandalf's deleted achievements, so I'll just add a few lines which really destroyed his character for me:

"How do we know that Frodo is alive?" Having to be encouraged by Aragorn.

"Pippin saw in the Palantir a glimpse of the Enemy's plan." Gandalf KNEW Sauron would attack Minas Tirith.

"I've sent him to his death." Having to be encouraged by Aragorn again.

And finally, he does not devise the deversion in The Last Debate. He's supposed to be the "great mover of deeds" , not some old guy who happens to know some magic. GREAT MOVER OF DEEDS!!!

PS: I would live in Rivendell, for the same reasons as Bob Praz and Lem.

PPS: I, too, got Imrahil as the name of the mystery Gondorian from the Decifer card game, but they are usually a reliable source.

PPPS: To Lilly: The dead king does not say "That line was broken" , he says "That blade was broken" , refering to Anduril, which "has been remade."

PPPPS: Farimar was not given the position of Steward after Denethor' death.
