February 28, 2004 To Jevic of Highgate To answer your question, Tolkien was catholic and religion was really important for him. His mother was anglican, but she converted to catholicism even though her family rejected her when she did so. As Tolkien was really close to his mother, his catholic religion was essential for him and we can easily see it in his works, especially in the Silmarillon, as you said.
