Exclamation Point
Eonwe

Going into the Academy Awards, I was really interested in three categories: picture, director, score. For the rest of the categories, I wanted RotK to do well, but wouldn't have been disappointed if it missed them. I think this is because it took home so few trophies the last two years.

But as the show went along, I started thinking, "How can you NOT give RotK best costume, makeup, art direction, etc...?" It's not even a contest! These areas of filmmaking are the trilogy's bread and butter. On the other hand, I'm glad LotR didn't sweep through these categories all three years. That would seem unfair to the dozens of other great films released in that time. And since the people involved in LotR don't really distinguish between the work they put in on RotK and the first two films, I don't think they mind.

All in all, heaping film #3 with a truckload of wins seems like a good way to go. What an exclamation point for LotR! But, this does kind of seem like the end of the line for all the LotR fun. I'm looking forward to the extended edition loads more than any new movie coming out this year. I just wish I could see it in a theater, where these films are meant to be seen.
