Don't Hate Me...
Lem

Don't hate me everyone, but I read the books after I saw FotR, and of course my reading was probably affected because of the movie. But, since I hadn't seen TTT or RotK it wasn't THAT different...also, one of my friends had struggled through the books before, and hadn't enjoyed it very much, while NOW he is an expert on Tolkien. (he used to post here, after FotR)
But seeing FotR really helped my imagination to grasp a lot of the things in the book. I had faces to put with names, and I knew what the settings looked like, and it was interesting to see what WASN'T included in the movie. I didn't compare the two, or hold the movie as "correct"...I don't know about you others, though.

To Thorongil: I really don't have a good response to your statement about Saruman, but maybe he was disdainful of Gandalf and his powers, so he underestimated what Gandalf could do with his staff...? or maybe he thought that Gandalf with his staff was no match for him anyway, so it wouldn't be too bad...well, I don't know.
