More Son of Gondor Disc.
Pip
I thought about what you said Danny, and it's true that Boromir did not in fact save the hobbits, because they would not have died even had he not been there. But think about it like this: was there any other way for Boromir to react? I mean, without being a complete villian (which he was not)?
Really and seriously, I don't think there could have been any other reaction to coming upon a bunch of orcs than to out-and-out fight them. The only other choice he had was to run away, and that's something he would have never done. So was Boromir's death in vain? I don't think so. He handled the situation in the only honorable way that there was. Even had he known that Merry and Pippin were not to be killed, would he have said, "Oh, you'll be okay! Let me go get Aragorn and we'll save you later!"
Yeah, even then, I think that that is completely out of character. He would have given it his best shot no matter what; even with the full knowledge that Merry and Pippin were just being kidnapped, and not seriously harmed.
Yeah, Boromir was a fighter.
