April 12, 2004 Borimir Yeah, I agree with you about Boromir. I suppose I was picking appart a word choice which in and of itself was unfair to do 8). I didn't like the way it was said something to the effect that Boromir saved Merry and Pippin's life, or died to do so. He didn't save their life neccesarily, but in his view of things he died to do so. So I was just having fun prodding a word choice. Of course I don't fault him for his heroic and valiant efforts. It was a noble and heroic sacrifice. I imagine that it was pretty clear that he wasn't going to escape that encounter from the moment he started and he jumped into the fire anyway. I think Boromir is a tragic character. Tolkien leaves plenty of material that shows Boromir's honor, courage, strength and valor. He then shows how the ring slowly overpowers him. It is sad to think what might have been had Boromir never seen the thing. So yes I agree with everyone else that Boromir is often unfairly maligned for his mistake.
