I think that Boromir's death was not in vain, because even though he was not saving Merry and Pippin he was saving himself. Boromir had just fallen into the evil of the Ring so by fighting to save Merry and Pippin he redeemed himself. The act of giving himself for his friends was an act of love and kindness, not of an evil man. Speaking as an actor the last scene of Boromir's, his death gives excellant insight into his character.
