April 25, 2004 Fan Fiction I have been reading all these articles about a follow-up to Tolkien's stories. I have not posted in a long time, but this sparked my interest. I believe that Tolkien's stories should be Tolkien's stories. He wrote it, and it was his creation. If someone wrote a story just as good...well that would be good! There are so many corny and ridiculous fantasy stories, that another needs to come out that has been thoroughly thought out and planned. Tolkien went incredibly in depth to his story. He studied languages, he studied myths, he was learned in what he wrote about. His creations are his, and I can imagine him turning in his grave at a story published with his world. It was his world! Someone is needed who is educated in the classics and gifted with words and knowledgeable about Celtic or medieval life. Then, only then, will they be able to create the masterpiece! This is just my opinion. And who would know if a Middle-Earth follow-up would be good anyway? It might be so horrible that it would join the tens bookshelves of ludicrous fantasy tales. And then we would all still be clamouring for another tale just as good as Tolkien's! |
