There is a major fault in your argument. You make no distinction between the Christian church and Christianity. The church can overstep its bounds, but Christians believe that God governs all things, and has every right to "impose certain restrictions on us" . Christian teachings HAVE "set us in a mode of thinking that has been set for thousands of years." That mode of thinking is called Truth.
