There was really only one option for goody-two-shoes-Gandalf if you wanted to stop evil. However, it wasnt the only one available. Sauron was right, people would claim his Ring and choose not to destroy it. The plan might be to destroy it but He Knew it wouldnt work, that they wouldn't and couldn't conciously (sp?) destroy it. Sauron knows us better than Gandalf. He knew that apart from a outside interference, no one could destroy the Ring. Perhaps Gandalf knew it as well. The only difference being Gandalf had the big kahuna Illuvatar on his side, which made for a decidedly unfair fight.
Sauron was wise in many ways. He was also flawed too. Sounds very human. Gandalf too was the same, wise (grudgingly allows this...a little) but also flawed. No ones perfect.

Lilly, class post. I always knew there was something shifty about Tom. No one that wears clothes like that can be right in the head. He did have an Evil sense of fashion. Oh and what was with those songs? hey doll merry doll....
Hmmmmmm

A tiny thing that bugs me in the ROTK, why did Legolas refer to Isildur as the last king of Gondor? Are we to believe that the Royal lineage has been in "exile" for 3+ thousand years?

You really get ther feeling that the most work was done on FOTR script, and alot less on the other two.
But hey, they are great movies. Just keep in mind Troy and the butchery done to that. It could have been so bad if other, unmentionable directors who should be impaled, had made the films.

"... not very long shall yea abide..." :) Ash Nazg...
