Halls of Mandos

I have been enjoying all the posts about the Undying Lands, my home.

As many people have said, when mortals die they do not stay in the Halls of Mandos; they don't even stay within the "circles of the world". But I believe they do go to the Halls for a time, don't they? If not, where is Beren (or Beren's body) between the time he dies and is restored to life by the Valar? The Valar certainly don't have the power to recall someone from beyond the circles of the world. If someone remembers how this is explained in the story of Luthien and Beren, I'd appreciate hearing it.
