George Lucas and Remakes

I would add maybe one thing to the Lucas v. Jackson dispute. In Lucas's defense, he was the original creator of the Star Wars universe, so he most definitely was not under the same pressure as PJ was. He could do whatever he wanted and not worry about being maimed by fans for screwing Han Solo up, since no one knew who Han was yet. PJ, however, did have that concern, especially with this particular story, which has had a cult following before, I think, most of us have even been able to read. This could possibly be a reason PJ paid so much attention to detail and spent so much energy and money to get (cough) everything right.

Regarding the eventual remake of LOTR:
I do not think it will occur for maybe 20-25 years, longer if PJ pulls a George Lucas and remakes the trilogy with new special effects and the like. I agree that if someone wants to do as successful a remake as PJ's movie, they would have to be completely devoted to it and then some.
