Welcome and Very Late
Niel of Mithlond
Hi again. I've been on vacation and unable to post, so here is a quick one.
First off, although I'm new too, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Nienna. I look forward to your posts.
I know this is very late in coming, but I wanted to comment on the whole" truth is relative, moral relativism " debate.First off, truth and right and wrong are absolutes. Here are three examples of how, when we say they aren't, things are screwed up.
But first a quick definition of moral relativism. There are no definite right or wrong actions, everything falls into a gray area between right and wrong, good and bad, immoral and moral. Based, of course, on the situation, your culture, life influences, how you feel at the time, ect.
1 Slavery. Some people believed that it was ok to have slaves. Hey, they thought, we are entitled to our opinion. Who are we to say whether slavery is right or wrong. Maybe they had a good reason. Maybe they felt slaves wern't people and had no rights, including liberty. Well, then it's all okey dokey, ain't it?
2 The Jewish Holocaust. Hitler and his pals thought it was ok to kill Jews. Some will argue, well maybe he had a good reason. Maybe his Jewish parent was abusive, or the Jewish boy down the street beat him up, and poor little Adolf was scarred psychologically for life. Or maybe, just maybe, Hitler didn't think Jews were persons, so it was ok to kill them, right?
3 Abortion. Well, shucks, abortion should be legal b/c it's all about the right to privacy, and personal opinions. after all, if we don't think or feel, that a baby is a human, with alife, it's ok to kill them. It's all good.
It all makes sense, now, that we've looked at it from our "enlightened and tolerant" world viewpoint, doesn't it? Strangely enough, people do actually look at things this way, as demonstrated in some posts.( If that is NOT what you were saying, I apoligize. You know whom you are.) But at some point, this way of thinking will come back to bite ya. No one is safe in a world without morals, truth, without standards of right and wrong. Absolutes, every one of them and universal as well.
I must go now, but I hope to be back soon. Hope I made sense, I was in a rush. God Bless!
