Witch King Stopped?

Danny, Gandalf did not stop the Witch King entering Minas Tirith, at best he delayed the Nazgul with chit chat until Rohan arrived and blew their tin trumpets. It was the arrival of Rohan not Gandalf that caused the Nazgul to pull back from the gate. As for Him breaking Gandalf's staff, how they could do it, seeing as the staff reappears later on in one piece, I dont know. But the Witch King could break it because he was a finger on the hand of Sauron, the power of Sauron could flow through him, in addition to his own inherent strength. The importance of a wizards staff is hazy at best. Is it a symbol? Is it a must in casting spells? or merely an aid?

Saw a model of the Mouth Of Sauron last week in Forbidden Planet, Dublin. Have to say he looks good.
