Retreat? Never!

Danny, the Witch King did not retreat nor wimp out from a confrontation with Gandalf the Old fool. Gandalf would have died (Again) and cursed in vain. To my mind only a slight amount of the original being is present in any of the Nazgul, especially when Saurons thought is flowing strongly through them. Only restrictions on their power is the inherent inability of any being other than Sauron to handle the glory, the majesty and the might, that is the Dark Lord.
As for Gandalf seeing off 5 Nazgul at Weathertop, running from a fight can hardly be seen as beating them. Ok they did not kill him, but they had a greater game in mind, the Ring. They wanted to stop Gandalf from joining up with the Ring, and so took no risks, they just herded him away. The object of a fight is not to win, but not to lose. I know it sounds like word play but there is wisdom in it.
Ah Annatar the Wise. Not a bad ring to it (Ow bad pun).

What if...
Way back in the day, when I was walking down the main street of Eregion, minding my own business (going back to work after a delightful lunch at Cafe Mallorn), when I was accosted by two ruffians. These two individuals wanted everything, money, rings, the lot. I denied them this and so a fracas ensued. Into this steps an Angel. She had seen my predicament and had come swiftly to render me aid. This golden haired she-elf quickly saw off the two ruffians, one of which, alas, was her husband, an oaf called Celeborn. She placed her hand on my shoulder and asked if I was alright. I gazed into her eyes and found love. Clumsily I answered in the affirmative. She left me then with a lingering gaze. Even now I think what if I had said something, something to keep her there. In time who knows...

at the very least I could have tortured her in Barad-dur for a few years.

Win win either way.

Hmmmmm Uncle Witch king could baby sit, mind you, him and that blond wench from Rohan (his girlfriend) bear watching. On the sofa in front of the palantir... tut tut.
