Danny, read the section in ROTK about the demise of the Witch King. It "spells" it out how he died. No lesser blade could have destroyed him. The spell on the blade broke the spell binding his essence together, and so his spirit would fly apart like morning mist before a strong breeze. A knife to the knee of a human, hardly fatal, but what if a poison was present? Cyanide Arsenic...? The spell on the blade was the Nazguls Cyanide. A spell to destroy a spell.
"By any means, The Witch King fell at the hands of two mortals no matter how you look at it." which is true, one to distract, the other to cowardly stick him with a spell bound knife.

As for Sauron, he did not go to help with the invasion of Valinor because (a)He knew it would fail and (b)Success for the invasion was not his plan, the destruction of Numenor was. As for being vanquished, nope he knew the Ring would save him.
He showed more courage than Gandalf because he had lost the Ring and knew that even if it wasn't destroyed a New Ringlord would turn on him, suffering no rival. So yes, even with the Ring intact Sauron could have been destroyed.
So while he had a knack for surviving, he wasn't assured of returning everytime as was Gandalf.
Also about him not coming forth to lead the Armies of Mordor, like Denethor said, all Great leaders and rulers send others to fight in their stead, spending the lives of even their sons, only coming forth to triumph over the vanquished.

G, about Tom Bombadil being Melkor. Perhaps I didn't explain the idea I had very well, I was grabbing straws to articulate it. I just felt that the good aspect of Melkor, wasn't destroyed when he became Morgoth, but somehow manifested itself as Tom. Melkor was the first to enter the world and Tom was the oldest and fatherless, both statements point to the same being. Yet how could this be so? Thats where my hypothosis comes in.
