Spot On
Ar-Pharazon
Tuor,
You are, of course, correct. Although I do not believe Sauron could have "controlled" Ar-Pharazon, he certainly could manipulate him and eventually control his offspring.
Could Ar-Pharazon's assault have been successful without Eru's intervention? I seriously doubt it. Ar-Pharazon may have been able to overcome the Elves, but certainly not the Valar and Maiar. Eru intervened to prevent the massive bloodshed of Elves and Men that no doubt would have occurred. The Valar and Maiar may even have been at a loss as to what to do - they have always hesitated in dealing with evil (they do not understand it).
Why was the destruction of the fleet not enough? Why did Eru destroy Numenor itself? My guess it was much like Sodom and Gomorrah. The crime had become so heinous that once The Faithful departed, the corrupt people and their lands were destroyed. Maybe even the fact that Sauron was on the island led to its destruction.
It is my opinion that Numenor was the greatest kingdom in Middle Earth and second only to Utumno/Angband in actual power. It is unfortunate that they could not understand the Gift of Men and allowed Sauron to poison their judgement.
