If Only We Were Directors...

I agree, the mood was definitely stronger in the books. You got the impression that every hobbit would shudder at the slightest mention of the word Mordor, though only the eldest had any clue of its significance. The days of Sauron were a myth, now becoming true again.
I'm not saying the movies didn't convey this sense of foreboding at all. It's just the little things that could have made it so much more (and make the movie much longer, expensive, yeah, yeah). I believe Gandalf waited to tell Frodo the story of the Rings until the morning, because night was not the proper time to discuss such things. In the movie, he just out and tells Frodo in the dead of night.
Or maybe a dark, smoggy colored bank of clouds reaching across Gondor and Rohan like a claw. And the Witch-king upon his dark steed, shouting his words of ruin with each strike of Grond. Yeah, that would be nice. Forget making Sauron more family-friendly. He needs to strike fear in the hearts of children everywhere!
Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait until someone remakes it.
