RE: Why FOTR isn't the best
Lilly

It is true that the biggest, and perhaps most memorable scenes are to be found in the ROTK or TT, however, those two movies also contain the biggest alterations to the story, the worst treatment of the characters, and some of the more poorly done special effects of all three (in my humble opinion).

When I say, I think the FOTR is the best, I mean I believe it is the best OVERALL. If you want the best, most loaded with cool one-liners or exciting scenes, it would probably not win. But as a Tolkien fan (and purist), I will always most enjoy the FOTR because:

1. I believe all the people and places shown in the FOTR were hit as near to dead-on as possible in a film.

2. The story was as close to the book as a good movie could be, and closer than I expected.

3. The special effects were, I believe, the most well done in the FOTR (I mean, there's more than one scene where I wince every time I watch the ROTK, thinking, "oohh...that's a size-double" or, "ouch. there's a blue screen").

But I like all three movies, and FOTR wins my affection by a small lead. I don't like how you make your argumets, Eonwe. You speak so finally:

"The notion seems to be abroad (more so on fan sites like this than among the general film-going public) that Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the three fabulous Lord of the Ring films. But that turns out to be wrong, dead wrong."

You're speaking that way can be very offensive, friend. To call another's personal opinion "dead wrong" is something else...you got scientific evidence to back that up?

It's okay for you to challenge, but make sure you're not using yourself as a standard. This really is a matter of opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own belief. That's how a forum works. It's just a movie.

opinionatedly yours.

Lilly
PS: the reason fan sites may like FOTR better is because they may be made up of more Tolkien Purists who appreciate the FOTR's maintenance of the story. The "general film-going public" are movie fans who have not read the book, and who may lean toward the action and drama more than the accuracy.
