Number Three is number one
Bob Praz

Don’t worry, Eonwe, I fully agree with you. ROTK was definitely my favourite. Although, as a movie, TTT comes in second place, my first experience of watching it in the theatre was marred by the radical changes from the book (I’m sorry, I couldn’t help but be disappointed). Although I got over it, and the TTT EE rectified many things, I would have to say FOTR and TTT are about equally good, overall.

Anyhow, apart from Denethor’s death, I loved everything about ROTK. Even Frodo telling Sam to go home did not bother me, as it was well done nevertheless, and it made the scene of Shelob’s Lair even more exciting and suspenseful. For those who protest against these kind of changes, keep in mind that movies must, by their very nature, compromise depth and logic, in order to deliver a good two hours (not to mention three) of entertainment.
