One thing, Gandalf didn't ride Shadowfax until after he escaped from Saroman. At that time he was taken by the eagle and set near Edoras, and that is when he took Shadowfax as a gift from the reluctant and at the time annoyed Theoden. His journey when he goes to find out about the ring was with a normal horse. The movie doesn't convey the time lapse well, but it also does nothing to say that it was a day's trip either.
