Agreements and Comments
Lem

Thanks, Simon for that really informative essay! I never really paid much attention to Gandalf's staff but next time I see FOTR I will!

Lady of Rohan, I agree with what you said about Arwen and saving Frodo. I don't think that Arwen and Aragorn would've gotten "freaky" in the woods while Frodo wasted away, either. And Jessie, your remarks about there being very few female characters in many older books is completely true! When I first saw FOTR, I noticed that the 9 containted all guys and so did the council. I was glad that there was SOME feminine prescense in Arwen and Galadriel (although Celeborn had what, one line??).

David, I agree that it made sense to cut out Tom Bombadill and that if he WAS in the movie it would have been a lot more confusing. I, for one, would probably have found him irrelavent (no offense to anyone or to Tolkien) and random. If the movie had had the time to flesh out the story well, I would've liked to see Bombadill show up, though.

If I hadn't already known that Aragorn marries Arwen and Eowyn marries Faramir before I read the books, I probably would've wanted Aragron and Eowyn to get together. Aragorn seemed so battle-hardened and weather beaten when Frodo and co. first meet up with him and Eowyn is the adventurous, strong woman type and I would've thought that they had a lot in common and would like each other more than implied.

I don't think it really matters what age you are when you debate here, because I am not as old as some people have implied they are-meaning that some people have said stuff about when they were in high school or college or something. I bet a lot of the people in this forum are a lot younger, like middle school or high school ages, so it really doesn't matter, I don't think, about the ages.

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now.
