"The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is a series of short novels chronicling the adventures of Arthur Dent and his friends Ford Prefect; Zphod Beeblebrox- who also happens to be Ford's cousin and President of the Galaxy; Tricia MacMillan, or Trillian; and Marvin the Paranoid Android who's not so much paranod as despondent. The book begins when Earth is destroyed by a race of slug-like aliens called Vogons, who happen to produce the third worst poetry in the galaxy, in order to make way for an interstellar hyperspace freeway. Madness and hilarity ensue as Arthur, et al embark on a ridiculous series of adventures across time and space.

I'm reading through the series right now, trying to finish it before the movie comes out at the end of the month. It's very funny and very off-the-wall. Depending on how busy you are, you could conceivably read through it in a week or two.
