Hi Brett. I just wanted to clarify... I am talking about Gandalf's journey FROM The Gondor TO The Shire, not Orthanc to Imladris. Secondly I am referring to the BOOK, not the movie. Gandalf "borrows" Shadowfax from Theoden when he passes through Rohan to get to Gondor. On the Way BACK TO The Shire, he is definately riding Shadowfax, remember, this is before he even goes to Orthanc. He meets Radagast, then goes to Bree, leaves the message with Butterburr at the Prancing Pony, and THEN rides to Orthanc. Shadowfax makes his way back to Rohan while Gandalf is in captivity and then Gandalf escapes via Gwaihir. Until Gandalf returns from the dead, and goes to Rohan, Shadowfax is in Rohan. After reviving Theoden, Gandalf rides Shadowfax until he goes over the sea. Thanks
