Alms and Wars
Annatar
Farlas, as for similarities 'tween the Colonies and Ireland, in their respective fights for freedom, one huge difference is, that it could be said that the colonies were exactly that, colonies of Britain. British citizens moving across the pond to setup British colonies, some named in honour of British queens; Virginia, Maryland...
Ireland on the other hand was always separate to Britain, at least that is until Henry II invaded (with the permission of the only English Pope!!!). So Irish rebellions were always against a foreign invader.
As for giving to the poor, there should be no limit on what is given. Saying that if you have already given you shouldnt give more, or exempt from giving more is suspect at best. If you have given thousands to the poor and you meet a begger who asks for a single Euro/Dollar but refuse him then all your good works before hand are for naught!
You are only as good as your last game.
All the time governments take in tax to help the unemployed, the disabled, the poor; there is nothing new in this.
Besides, the people vote in the government that reflect their wishes, if the people no longer want a certain tax etc, they can contact their representative and complain... and/or vote them out next time with people who will remove it.
Indeed, as the tax in question is on flights, its not as if the government "makes" a person pay; no one said they have to take the plane....
:D
"Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious"
"World Citizen"? If I guess as to your meaning, what is wrong with that?! We all inhabit the same mudball in space, we are all (well mostly) human. Why not view everyone as brothers and sisters of one family (a certain carpenter preached this message). We all fall prey to tribalism; my country, my church, my football team... more important than yours...
Loyalty should be given to what is right and good to God and everyone.
If, a government says a person in a foreign country are the enemy, but you see that they are being maligned and persecuted, does not your loyalty lie with those who are wronged and not with the country you are a citizen of?
If not, then Patriotism make good citizens blind to the actions of their government.
Hey Opalys, how you keeping these days? You and yours?...
See you all laters my friends :) Ash Nazg...
PS.
"Be you Angels?" And we said "Nay, we are but Men. ROCK!"
